William Matthew Marine letters and diary, 1867-1872.

Collection comprises Marine's diary (1867-1868) and four letters from his relative William Johns, who was a resident of Georgia. The diary holds daily entries for trips Marine took to Niagra Falls (Aug 1867) and to the Midwest (July-August 1868). Topics in the letters include family matters and events, Johns' employment and pastimes, as well as his opinions about Marine's political prospects. Also includes a letter from John's to G. W. Marshall requesting an appointment as special agent in the post office department. The letter includes a written testimonial by Marine. Acquired as part of the George Washington Flowers Collection of Southern Americana.
